Made to Measure Coats & Jackets

Made to Measure Coats & Jackets, Crafted to Last a Lifetime

A Coat Made Entirely Around You

A great coat is more than outerwear. It is a statement of character, a daily companion through British winters, and an investment that improves with every wearing. At Leonard Silver, our made to measure coat service gives you access to the finest coating cloths in the world, shaped precisely to your body and finished to the exacting standards our Hull workroom has upheld since 1946. Whether you have a specific vision in mind or are coming to us for guidance, our tailors will ensure the result is entirely yours.

Every made to measure coat we create begins with a conversation and ends with a garment that fits no one else on earth. Prices start from £1,000, reflecting the quality of cloth, the hours of skilled handwork, and the personalised service that distinguishes Leonard Silver from anything found on the high street.

The Cloth

The cloth is the foundation of any coat, and the range available to you through Leonard Silver is exceptional. We work with the most celebrated mills in the world, sourcing fabrics that reward close inspection and wear beautifully across decades.

From Loro Piana, we offer some of the finest pure cashmere overcoat cloths available anywhere. They are extraordinarily soft, supremely warm, and carry a quiet luxury that speaks for itself. For more structured coating weights, Scabal and Holland & Sherry provide outstanding wools in classic and contemporary colourways, including rich wool melton, a dense smooth cloth with impeccable drape, and the perennially elegant herringbone weave, which adds visual texture without sacrificing formality.

Dormeuil brings its celebrated French-British heritage to the table with refined coating options, while Fox Brothers of Wellington, Somerset, supplies some of the finest cavalry twill and traditional British coating tweeds you will find. For those seeking something particularly distinguished, camel hair cloth remains one of the great expressions of classic English tailoring, lightweight for its warmth and ageing with remarkable grace.

Our tailors will guide you through each option, taking into account your aesthetic preferences, the climate you dress for, your lifestyle, and the silhouette you want to achieve. A well-chosen cloth makes the coat, and our tailors will help you choose wisely.

The Styles

The Overcoat is the most versatile of all outerwear styles. Single-breasted, typically falling to the knee or just below, it is suited to almost every occasion from the boardroom to the weekend. A bespoke overcoat in this form works equally well over a lounge suit as it does over more casual dress, making it the first choice for many of our clients commissioning their first made to measure coat.

The Crombie is a British institution. Characterised by its clean, unfussy silhouette, velvet collar, and medium length, the Crombie coat carries an air of restrained authority that has never gone out of fashion. In a deep navy, charcoal, or camel hair cloth, it is as relevant today as it was in the post-war decades when Leonard Silver first opened its doors.

The Double-Breasted Topcoat is for those who want their outerwear to make a considered statement. The sweep of the wide lapels and the overlapping front panels create a silhouette of genuine presence. We recommend it in a smooth melton or a fine cashmere for maximum impact.

The Ulster is a longer, more substantial coat, traditionally belted and cut with generous ease to allow heavy layering beneath. It suits the man who travels, who walks, who needs a coat built for genuine British weather without compromising on elegance.

The Tweed Sport Coat brings the tailored jacket into more relaxed territory. Cut from a coating tweed or a robust Fox Brothers cloth, it is the ideal companion for country weekends, racecourse days, or any occasion where a certain ease is expected without abandoning dressing well.

The Blazer or Tailored Jacket made to measure offers a level of fit that no off-the-peg garment can approach. Whether in a classic navy hopsack, a chalk-stripe flannel, or a bold check, a made to measure jacket from Leonard Silver moves with you, sits correctly on the shoulder, and flatters your exact proportions. It pairs seamlessly with the rest of your Leonard Silver wardrobe, including our made to measure suits.

The Details

The details are where a made to measure coat truly separates itself from anything ready-made. Every element of your garment is your choice, guided by our tailors to ensure the result is coherent, personal, and built to endure.

Lining can be specified in a rich silk or satin, and the colour is entirely your own. Whether you prefer a restrained charcoal that whispers quality, or a vivid scarlet that turns every removal of the coat into a small occasion, the choice is yours.

Buttons are chosen from horn, corozo nut, or metal options, each carrying a different character. Natural horn is the choice of the traditionalist; corozo offers a clean, matte finish; polished or antique metal suits the more dramatic styles.

The collar may be specified as notch, peak, or, for the Crombie, a classic velvet collar in black or a contrasting colour. Pockets can be configured as jetted, patch, or with a ticket pocket, and each style carries its own associations and practical advantages.

Finally, length and silhouette are discussed in full during your fittings. We offer everything from a slim, close-fitting cut to the more relaxed classical silhouette, adjusted to suit your frame, your posture, and the way you carry yourself.

The Process

Our service is structured to be straightforward, thorough, and entirely focused on your result.

1. Initial Consultation. We begin with a relaxed conversation about your requirements, your lifestyle, and the occasions you are dressing for. This consultation can take place in our Hull store or, for clients within approximately 50 miles of our premises, through our travelling tailor service where we come to you.

2. Cloth Selection. You will be presented with cloth swatches from our mill partners, and our tailors will offer considered guidance on weight, weave, and colour to suit both your brief and your existing wardrobe.

3. Measurements. Over 30 individual measurements are taken to build a precise understanding of your body: chest, waist, seat, sleeve length, back length, shoulder width, posture, and a great deal more. These measurements form the basis of your personal pattern, which is retained on file for future commissions.

4. Fitting Appointments. A half-canvas fitting garment is prepared, allowing us to assess the shape and make any adjustments before the final cloth is cut. Further fittings are scheduled as required, each refining the result.

5. Collection or Delivery. Your completed garment is finished by hand in Yorkshire and presented to you in store or delivered directly. Every coat leaves us ready to wear from the moment it arrives.
